More Than a Field Trip:
How community experiences prepare
transition students for life after WPSBC
EXPERIENCES
When the bus arrives at Frick Park, you can feel
the excitement in the air as students prepare to
begin their day. For Secondary Students at
WPSBC, this visit is a structured educational
experience that provides opportunities to
practice and apply skills in real-world settings.
This visit is just one example of the many
community experiences that help prepare
Secondary Program students for life beyond
the classroom.
Sara Georgalis, Community-Based Instructor
at WPSBC, coordinates these community
experiences in collaboration with multidisciplinary
educational teams as part of each student’s
transition plan—an individualized part of their
education program that helps them build
real-world skills.
Each student’s Individualized Education Plan
(IEP) includes a transition plan with three areas
of focus: independent living, postsecondary
education and training, and employment.
Through experiences in each of these areas,
students gain the skills and confidence they’ll
need after graduation.
“We focus on teaching practical life skills on
campus,” explains Sara. “While students can
practice these important skills in places like
our on-campus student apartment, vocational
classroom, and classroom environments, it’s
the community experiences that give students
the opportunity to generalize these skills and
apply them in real-world settings.”
