The Thrill of the Ride:
Ted Crum Remembers the Vintage Tin Braille Rally
For Ted Crum, WPSBC Class of 1979, few memories
stand out more than the Vintage Tin Braille Rally. He
fondly remembers this exciting springtime tradition that
turned the streets of Oakland and surrounding areas into
a roar of engines, friendly competition, and teamwork.
Ted began participating in the rally in seventh grade and
looked forward to it every single year. “It was one of the
most exciting nights of the year,” he recalled with a grin.
“We’d all count down the days until the cars showed up.”

The classic and antique vehicles lined up along
Bellefield Avenue, as members of the Vintage Tin car
club greeted students and let them pick the car they
wanted to ride in. “Those folks really cared,” Ted said.
“They took time out of their lives, year after year, just
to give us this amazing experience. They got to know
us and looked forward to it every year.”
