PARTNERSHIPS
Every Friday, WPSBC
student Darlene
walks into Cookie
Cookie Ice Cream for
her volunteer shift.
She has been coming to the small
businesses in McKees Rocks for over a
year and has been involved in tasks that
range from assembling and labeling
packaging to assisting with the baking
process. Her favorite part of the day?
Getting to interact with all of her friends!
Volunteer opportunities like this are part
of the vocational program provided to
our WPSBC students. The volunteer
opportunity at Cookie Cookie Ice Cream
is made possible through the partnership
organized by Valerie Farino, Transition
Coordinator at WPSBC. Valerie works
with Vocational Instructor, Kristen
Rehberg, and the educational teams to
assess opportunities that will allow
students to volunteer in the community.
“Students who have experience in the
vocational program, who have received
on-campus vocational instruction,
and have developed skill sets that lend
themselves to off-campus volunteer
work are recommended by Kristen and
each student’s WPSBC educational team,”
Valerie explains. “Over the past 3 years,
we have offered these off-campus
volunteer opportunities as a way to
support the goals for the student’s
post-secondary transition.”
